Two More Maps, Newsletter Release, & Author Article

I am pleased to report that two maps of key locations featured in The Angel of Darkness have now been added to the Alienist maps section of the site. As with the maps of key locations featured in The Alienist that I released late last week, the first Angel of Darkness map includes 26 key locations around New York City while the second map includes 15 key locations outside the city. As with the preceding maps, full lists of all the locations marked on the maps can be found below each map, and these can be ordered according to location name, location category, address, or description by clicking on the appropriate column heading. You can also search the list of locations via the search field included immediately below the maps.

In addition, the first 17th Street newsletter has been sent out to subscribers. For those who haven’t signed up and may be interested, the newsletter will be released on a monthly basis to provide a summary of the preceding month’s book and website news, a summary of the topics covered during the preceding month’s history blogs, and an author spotlight section containing an excerpt from an author interview/article that might be of interest to visitors. You can view the July newsletter here. If you think you would be interested in receiving the monthly newsletter, you can sign up via the site’s side menu. Your email address will not be shared with any third parties and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Finally, I thought it might be of interest to visitors that Caleb Carr was recently asked to comment on a long and elaborate New York Times piece from 1852 about a heatwave that hit the city during July of that year. The piece’s unusual length, subject matter, and purplish prose drew varying interpretations from the other eminent historians and writers who were asked to comment on the piece, with Mr. Carr focusing his comments on the attitude expressed by the journalist in the piece.

“The more dramatic he makes it sound, the more he makes himself and his readers feel that they are surviving a great struggle,” Mr. Carr said, “that just by getting through the average day in New York, they are validating what in nearly all cases are anonymous — and all too often, in their own minds, meaningless or at least futile — existences.”

“Maybe life in New York now,” he added, “so clean, so crime-free, so law abiding and safe, is a better place. I don’t know. But personally, I preferred the town that made each citizen feel that kind of validation in mere survival.”

Two New Alienist Maps

In recognition of our author’s birthday today, I have decided to release two new Alienist maps that I have been working on to replace 17th Street’s previous maps. These two new maps are specially customised interactive Google maps of every location featured in The Alienist. One map features The Alienist‘s 31 key locations around New York City while the other features The Alienist‘s 7 key locations outside of New York City. Full lists of all the locations marked on the maps can be found below each map. These can be ordered according to location name, location category, address, or description by clicking on the appropriate column heading, and the list of locations are also fully searchable via the appropriate field included immediately below the maps. I’m really excited about these new maps and will be releasing two further maps for key locations in The Angel of Darkness over the coming days.

Many happy returns, Mr. Carr!

The Alienist Movie & Press Page Updates

One of the most frequent questions that brings visitors to 17th Street is whether The Alienist will ever be made into a movie. To help address this question, I’ve now added a page detailing the long and complicated history of The Alienist movie as best as I have been able to make it out on the basis of past interviews with the author. Interested visitors can view The Alienist movie page in the Alienist books section of the site.

In addition, I have added a large number of opinion pieces, book reviews, columns, and academic journal articles written by Caleb Carr to the press page. As always, if you know of any other articles written by or about Caleb Carr that you think should be included on the press page, please feel free to let me know.

Change Of Direction

17th Street seems to have been in a permanent state of revolution in recent months, and more big changes continue in this update. I am extremely happy to report that the site has nine new pages of content up this month, and consequently the site has needed to undergo one final reorganisation in order to accommodate them. However, with any luck, this should be the last major reorganisation that will be needed within the foreseeable future. Hooray!

New Content

The site now has seven new pages containing synopses and selected critical response for all of Caleb Carr’s non-Alienist books, both fiction and non-fiction. These pages can be viewed in the other books section of the site. Due to this, all of the Alienist-related content can now be found within one central Alienist books section of the site.

In terms of Alienist-related content, I am pleased to be releasing a new The Angel of Darkness 50-question quiz to match the 40-question quiz that’s already available for The Alienist. More importantly, seven years after promising it, Stevie Taggert finally has a complete character analysis to match the analyses that are already up for the other six main characters of the books. Excitingly, these two new pieces of content mark the completion of three sections of the Alienist books section site–unless and until a new Alienist book is released. To say that I am thrilled to have finally reached this point in 17th Street’s development is a massive understatement.

Finally, the lovely and talented Tiffany who has been creating some wonderful fanart for the books, recently created a delightfully geeky 19th century portrait of me for the about page of the site as a bit of fun. Anyone who is familiar with the leather bound Franklin Library editions of the Alienist books might notice an extra little bit of geekery in the portrait, too. If you haven’t seen her Alienist work already, you can check it out on the message board.

Changing Direction

With most of the site’s content now up to date, I feel that I can begin to embark on the next phase for 17th Street: a change of direction for the blog. My initial goal for 17th Street was to turn the site into something of an online encyclopedia for the Alienist books, and had consequently planned that the Alienist history section of the site should be developed in much the same way as the other sections of the site. However, the internet has changed since the site was opened, and I feel that this point in the site’s development offers an opportunity to go in a different direction.

Although general website updates and Caleb Carr news will still appear here as appropriate, over the coming months the blog will feature twice weekly posts offering discussion on the real history behind some aspect of the books, as well as discussion about Caleb Carr’s other works. Starting toward the end of this month, the first series of posts will begin so keep an eye out through the RSS feed, twitter, tumblr, the newsletter, or the message board.
