Stevie Taggert Quotes

Uncomfortable In Formal Attire

The Alienist, 452:

The boy looked quite recovered from the beating he’d taken at Conner’s hands, though he was obviously uncomfortable in such attire, and not very happy to be at the opera.

“Don’t worry, Stevie,” I said, taking a swipe at his shoulder. “It’s never been known to actually kill anyone.”

Stevie stuck a finger into his collar and tried to loosen the thing with a few tugs. “What I wouldn’t give for a cigarette,” he mumbled under his breath. “Don’t have one, do you, Mr. Moore?”

On Being Important

The Angel of Darkness, 80:

I shrugged again. “It’s your decision, I guess. I mean, I do understand — with what happened –“

“Yes.” He didn’t turn as he added, “We almost lost you, last time around.”

[…]

I pondered the thing. “I never thought — I mean, I figured you’d be thinking of –“

“I know,” the Doctor answered. “It wouldn’t have been like you to think anything else. You haven’t had many years of believing that you’re important, Stevie. But you are.”

On Art

The Angel of Darkness, 102:

I looked from the Doctor and Miss Howard to Pinkie and finally back to the picture. “I don’t get it,” I said.

Pinkie smiled at me and stroked his beard. “Now, that’s what I like to hear. What don’t you get, young Stevie?”

“What’s with the snake?” I said, pointing at it.

“What does it mean to you?” he answered.

“Gotta be one fast snake, to keep up with that horse.” Pinkie seemed to find that very satisfying. “And speaking of the horse, Pinkie, he’s going the wrong direction — you oughtta know that.”

“Yes,” Pinkie answered, looking at the picture.

“And how about the sky?” I asked. “Is it supposed to be day or night-time?”

“Do you know,” Pinkie answered, squinting those strangely colored eyes. “I hadn’t thought about it.”

“Hunh,” I said, giving the picture the once-over again. “Well, sorry, Pinkie, but it gives me the jitters. I’ll take that one up there.” I pointed to a nice, richly colored job that showed a pretty young girl with strawberry-blond hair: shadowy, yes, but comforting, not gloomy.

Discussing Studying With Kat

The Angel of Darkness, 178:

“He must work you to the bone,” she said, opening the silver cigarette case on the marble mantel.

“It ain’t the work that’s tough,” I said, sitting in the Doctor’s chair like I was lord of the house. “He makes me study.”

Study?” Kat said, her face filling with near disgust. “What the hell for?

In Love With Kat

The Angel of Darkness, 561:

“Stevie – one thing I never asked you…”

“Yeah, Kat?”

“How come? I mean, you looking out for me all this time?”

I gripped her hand tighter. “That don’t sound like the girl with the big plans what I know,” I said. “How can I expect you to hire me as a servant if I ain’t nice to you now?”

She picked up her right hand and weakly slapped at my arm. “I’m serious,” she said. “Why, Stevie?”

“Ask Dr. Kreizler when he gets here. He’s full of explanations.”

“I’m askin’ you. Why?

I just shook my head and shrugged a little bit, then turned my face down to look at her hand. “‘Cause. I care about you, that’s why.”

“Maybe,” she breathed, “maybe you even love me some, hunh?”

I shrugged again. “Yeah. Maybe I even do.”
