There is no denying that it has been quite some time since my last update. Unfortunately, 17th Street simply became a casualty of trying to fit too much into too little time. Rest assured that I never had any plans to permanently walk away from something that has given me so much over the years, so I am back to share an important update with those of you who, like me, continue to appreciate these wonderful books.
Let’s begin with the news that I’m sure you are all most interested in. Loyal readers would be aware that several years ago Mulholland Books announced that they would be publishing the long-awaited third Alienist novel in late 2019. When this did not come to pass, it prompted a number of readers to wonder what had happened. I have now had it confirmed that the book suffered a significant delay due to a necessary change in its concept and plot from what had originally been announced. Fortunately, the resulting change has been well-received by everyone involved, and I’m sure we are all looking forward to learning more about the new book’s premise once it is announced.
Even though this is good news for the series, I am sorry to report that this third instalment is also facing an additional challenge. Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that Caleb Carr is currently waging a formidable health battle that is slowing his progress on the book. Despite this, I can confirm that Caleb still has every intention of moving forward with the novel in the future and is looking forward to doing so. First and foremost, however, he needs to continue to focus his energy on his ongoing treatment. I hope you will join me in wishing Caleb the very best as he fights this important battle.
Finally, regular visitors to the website will be aware that this update also brings change to the air. After many years with the old site layout, I decided it was time to finally be refreshed. So, in honour of Caleb’s birthday today, I am pleased to share 17th Street’s new look with you all. I hope that you like the layout and find it easy to navigate. You may also notice some small updates to the formatting throughout the site over the coming weeks.
Thank you for this important update. While I greatly look forward to the next story in the Alienist series, Caleb Carr’s health is what’s truly important here. Whatever battle he is facing, I hope he is successful in ovecoming it and will have good health going forward. My thoughts go out to him at this time in his life.
Good luck, Caleb. My wife just had cancer surgery, so far 100% gone, (keeping fingers crossed). I love all of Caleb’s books, whether Alienist or historical. Again, I wish you better health.
Sending positive energy Caleb’s way with hopes for his recovery. As an author myself I know how important it is for your mind to be “in a good place” in order to go forward with a story and I sincerely wish Caleb success in his endeavors. He will be in my thoughts while we wait for this latest achievement from him.
Thank you so much for the update. Praying he recovers soon.
Sending good wishes and energy for his health and well being.
Thank you so much for this update. I was confused as to the status of the third book, and wondered what had happened, or if it was canceled.
While I yearn for a third book with all of our old friends, Caleb’s health is far more important. Sending prayers and positive vibes his way.
Can anyone provide additional information on my suspicions?
In reading the autobiography of Allan McLane Hamilton, “Recollections of an Alienist,” I notice close parallels between Hamilton’s life with that of Carr’s protagonist Lazlo Kreizler. Additionally, an assessment of hamilton’s personality by one who knew him, Dr. C. L. Dana, in a review penned for the journal “Medical Record,” 1920. Dana describes Hamilton as “having a restlessness and temperamental character that interfered with his practice.” The Brooklyn Eagle argues in an article that Hamilton is being duplicitous in the New York Times article, The Peril of an Insane Administration, where he attacked Theodore Roosevelt after the president helped keep his son out of the brig only a few years prior.
It seems as though he is doing better since he is coming out with a new book about his cat, Masha – My Beloved Monster – release date 4/16/24
Watched cbs this morning today. 4/13/24. Interview 52 minutes in suggests caleb Carr has cancer and prognosis isn’t good. Wishing him the best of healing and peace
But also wishing him the best of letting go if that’s what he needs. We’d all love to hear his storytelling to come for decades. But if peace and rest is what he needs, we’ll sadly accept it and wish him the best. Either way, thanks for all of your stories and all you’ve given us mr carr
Thank You So Much for the update. I wish this were better news, however. Thoughts and prayers for Healing and Strength, Caleb! Thank you for all of the wonderful works you’ve brought us thus far! Looking forward to more Alienist and other great works from You, Caleb…
I just finished reading Caleb Carr’s most beautiful,
And deeply emotional memoir about Masha, his Siberian cat. I cried as he described the heart wrenching day he had to say Goodbye to his very special and beloved friend. My heart broke as I know personally what it feels to lose a much loved precious cat. This book was truly special ! Thank you so much Mr. Carr for writing it. Praying for you
Too. I know you’ll see your Beautiful Masha again one day !!
I completed My Beloved Monster Cat and found your story endearing and tender. What a life you led with Masha, the brave and darling that she was. I listened to your story, and my only regret is that I do not have a copy of the book, but creeping vision loss makes that so. Your narrator did the story justice for me and allowed me to be with the story throughout, in fact it may have made her story even more vivid.
I admire your writing enormously, particularly how you weave the past into the present, a feat that too may writers make a distraction but not you.
Love and Kindness
Having lived with cats all my adult life and knowing the joy and sadness they’ve brought; I can relate all too well to My Beloved Monster Cat. A very touching story about the deep relationships that cats bring into our lives. I understand all too well how they are more trusting than most people I know, and their friendships are everlasting. I only wish I could write to him to let it be known how much this book has touched me and how emotional it was to read. Mr. Carr, I can only wish you the best with your allotted time on this place we call home and thank you from the depths of my heart.
Sleep sweetly, Caleb Carr.
May you and Masha wander the Elysian fields together … joyfully, in wonder, and in perpetuam.
May you find healing for every ill of body and soul.
And, for your family … may your memory be for a blessing.
