Introducing Kreizler, John, and Sara

The Alienist Promo

No sooner had I posted about the new trailer for TNT’s upcoming adaptation of The Alienist than three clips were released by TNT to introduce the characters of Dr. Kreizler, Sara Howard, and John Moore. The clip of Daniel Brühl introducing Dr. Kreizler can be found below. The additional clips of Dakota Fanning introducing Sara Howard and Luke Evans introducing John Moore can be found at TNT’s YouTube channel.

Finally, a reminder to those visitors from the NYC region that Caleb Carr will be offering a Master Class this week as part of the Center for Fiction’s Crime Fiction Academy. If you are interested in attending the Master Class, you can view the details of the event and RSVP at the Center’s website. The Master Class will be taking place on Thursday, December 7th at 7:00pm.

I’m still not sold on this series. Mr. Carr gave a recent interview to the New York Times about the upcoming show and he appears torn about it. On the one hand, he praised the performances of Mr. Evans and Mr. Bruhl, as well as the visuals of the series. But on the other hand, he also admits he’s had to separate himself as author and look at the show strictly as a viewer. This is normally natural, however when you take into account that the NYT article also mentions that the killer’s perspective, absent from the book, is introduced early in the series, it’s easy to understand how Mr. Carr could be frustrated. Also, the article points out that Sara Howard has been broadened into a fuller portrait of a young woman trying to be tough enough to thrive in a man’s world without losing her femininity and sexuality. Again, there’s no need for this ‘broadening’. Sara Howard is already fully realized in the novel. It’s all there for the script writers to have lifted from the book and put in their TV series.

So I’ll still continue to avoid the show, but I maintain that I want the show to succeed with the average viewer, just because it could very well mean more book sales for Mr. Carr. And that’s never a bad thing because I want his books to do well!

Matthew, I see your perspective I am inclined to agree. I am watching the series with a critical eye. I am going to develop a series of reviews akin to literary criticism that examines the deviations between the novel and the adaptation.

Can Amazon have interviews with Caleb on the work he did with the Alienist. Caleb is himself an alienist seeking all the data and looking into the pathology of the characters. The work he does in depth and he is very private so I am just asking what he would like to share with the readers and the viewers of the TNT events. The history is totally on point. Rich detail. What did he learn as he created ? What can he share that he wishes to share with the public?
