John originally knew Stevie simply as Dr Kreizler's ward. During the events of The Alienist, however, John makes the discovery that Stevie shares his passion for gambling and it is through this activity that the pair form a life-long friendship. I've known John Schuyler Moore since I was eleven years old, which would be some twenty-four years, and I would be hard-pressed to name a fairer, more decent, or generally kinder man. But he does run deep, and like most that do, there's a pool of hurt and bitterness inside him that sometimes can't help but stream on out.
Sara is a life-long friend of John and the pair grew up in the same area of Manhattan. John even briefly, on one drunken occassion, declared his love for her and proposed.
