Abbey, Henry

Impresario who manages the Metropolitan Opera House with Maurice Grau, where Dr. Kreizler owns a private box that acts as the setting for many scenes within The Alienist.

Adams, Brooks

Writer of “The Law of Civilisation and Decay”, he is a critic of capitalism and during the 1890s he suggests that a war is needed to “reinvigorate” the American population. He is mentioned within The Angel of Darkness as Dr. Kreizler finds out that Theodore Roosevelt has been taking these ideas seriously, despite the Doctor informing him that Brooks may be pathologically delusional.

Bancroft, Reverend

Within The Angel of Darkness, Reverend Bancroft temporarily manages the Kreizler Institute for the duration of the investigation into Paulie McPherson’s suicide.

Bates, Henry

Mr. Bates is a builder who worked on an underground extension to Libby Hatch’s home prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness. He died of a heart attack on the day he finished the building work, probably due to Libby poisoning him.

Beaux, Cecilia

An artist who the investigative team hires to draw a sketch of Libby Hatch based on Señora Linares’s descriptions within The Angel of Darkness. In order to obtain her services, Sara Howard had to contact Mrs. Cady Stanton who insisted on accompanying Miss Beaux on her drawing commission.

Beecham, George

Within The Alienist, it is found that George Beecham had been hired to work on the Dury farm when Japheth Dury (aka John Beecham) had been a boy. George sexually abused Japheth during his stay on the farm and it is assumed this is why Japheth chose to go by the name John Beecham later in life.

Betty

One of Kat’s friends who is met within The Angel of Darkness. She works at Frankie’s dive and helps Stevie out when Kat goes missing for a short time.

Blake, Frances

Dr. Kreizler’s first romantic involvement when he was at Harvard. They were going to marry but before this happened, the Doctor realised that she was a similar character to his mother and he didn’t really love her. Rather, he had been trying to change her to be the person he had always wanted his mother to be. Upon this realisation, he broke off his engagement to her.

Bly, Nellie

Nellie is a friend of Sara Howard. She is mentioned within The Angel of Darkness as she wrote an article in the World regarding the evils of Saratoga.

Boas, Franz

Franz Boas is a famous anthropologist. He is named as an old friend of Dr. Kreizler and is consulted on several matters within both The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness.

The current operator of the Casino in Saratoga who takes an interest in Libby Hatch’s trial in The Angel of Darkness from a gambling perspective (e.g., wanting odds on the outcome of the trial).

Casey, Detective Sergeant

Detective Sergeant Casey accompanied Detective Sergeant Patrick Connor in The Alienist when the latter visited the Santorelli family following Giorgio’s death. Mr. Santorelli was beaten unconscious during this visit when he refused a bribe to hush up the murder, and it is presumed that he lost his job at the same time as Detective Sergeant Connor as a result.

Cort, Emily

Mentioned within The Alienist. She is a friend of Sara Howard who went slumming one night with the intention to meet Paul Kelly. She is an “empty-headed little fool” according to Sara.

Crazy Butch

One of Monk Eastman’s men who runs a gang of street boys. He is mentioned briefly within The Angel of Darkness as Stevie worked for him before becoming Dr. Kreizler’s ward.

Delmonico, Charlie

The youngest of the Delmonico family who took over the family restaurant business. He plays a small role within both The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness given that Delmonico’s restaurant is an important setting for many of the scenes in both books.

Ding Dong

Runs the “kids auxiliary” of the Hudson Dusters, a gang led by Goo Goo Knox. He employs Kat within The Angel of Darkness and is met on several occasions by Stevie Taggert and the rest of the investigative team.

Dunning, Phil

The Sheriff in the town of Ballston Spa during The Angel of Darkness.

Dury, Adam

Older brother of John Beecham who, toward the conclusion of The Alienist, provides some crucial facts about his brother to the investigative team.

Dury, Mrs.

The wife of Reverend Dury and the mother of both Adam Dury and John Beecham. Her harsh treatment of her son played an important role within his later development. She was found murdered outside her home in New Paltz, New York several years prior to the events of The Alienist. It was originally believed that she was murdered by Indians but through investigations made by Dr. Kreizler and John Moore, it was found that she was actually killed by her own son.

Dury, Victor

Reverend Dury is the father of John Beecham who, like his wife, was found murdered outside his home prior to The Alienist. Dr. Kreizler and John Moore determined that he and his wife had been killed by their son.

Eastman, Monk

Monk Eastman is mentioned within The Angel of Darkness due to Stevie Taggert’s association with one of his men, Crazy Butch. Eastman is one of the “sheriffs” of New Irving Hall and his gang regularly engages in turf wars with Paul Kelly’s Five Points Gang.

Flynn, Sergeant

Police sergeant Flynn is from the Fifteenth Precinct in New York. John Moore meets him briefly within The Alienist.

Fuller, Mr.

An attendant working at the Insane Pavilion at Bellevue hospital.

Goo Goo Knox

Leader of the Hudson Dusters, a gang that operates on the West Side and the waterfront below Fourteenth Street. He is mentioned several times within The Angel of Darkness as Kat and Libby Hatch are both involved with the Dusters.

Grau, Maurice

Impresario who manges the Metropolitan Opera House with Henry Abbey, where Dr. Kreizler owns a private box that acts as the setting for many scenes within The Alienist.

Grose, Mr.

The editor of the Ballston Weekly Journal who follows Libby Hatch’s trial within The Angel of Darkness.

Hamilton, Albert

An “expert” in everything from ballistics to toxicology; he will say anything required of him in a court of law for the right price. He is called as a witness by Clarence Darrow within The Angel of Darkness.

Harper, Mitchell

Mr. Harper runs an accounts settled office that employed John Beecham as a debt collector prior to the events of The Alienist.

Harriet

Harriet is Mrs. Moore’s maid and housekeeper within The Alienist.

Hastings, Mrs.

Mrs. Hastings is Mr. Picton’s housekeeper and cook within The Angel of Darkness.

Hatch, Daniel

Important to the formation of Libby Hatch’s character within The Angel of Darkness, Daniel was Libby’s husband while she lived in Ballston Spa. He was elderly and died prior to Libby’s attempted murder the Hatch children.

Hatch, Matthew

Clara Hatch’s brother who was murdered by his mother, Libby Hatch, prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness. He had another sibling who was also murdered in the same event, Thomas Hatch.

Hatch, Thomas

Clara and Matthew Hatch’s brother, also murdered by Libby Hatch several years prior to The Angel of Darkness.

Hearst, William Randolph

Hearst is mentioned briefly within The Angel of Darkness as he owned The New York Journal. It is an influential and cheap newspaper that pushed for the Spanish-American War during the time Theodore Roosevelt was in the Navy.

Henry

Henry is a guard at the Ballston Spa courthouse within The Angel of Darkness. He is seduced by Libby Hatch helps her escape from her cell prior to the conclusion of the trial. Unfortunately, she murders him shortly after this event.

Hickie the Hun

Hickie is a youth that Stevie knows from his time as a street kid. He lends Stevie his ferret, Mike, for the purpose of breaking into Libby Hatch’s home within The Angel of Darkness.

Hogan, Captain

Police Captain Hogan is met briefly in The Angel of Darkness as he is overseeing an investigation into part of a body being washed up on shore that the Isaascon brothers are involved in.

Höpner, Herr

Herr Höpner is a lower-class German whose daughter was enrolled at the Kreizler Institute without his permission. He confronts Dr. Kreizler within The Alienist.

Howard, Mrs.

Little is known of Sara Howard’s mother except that she was an invalid. She is mentioned briefly within The Alienist.

Howard, Stephen Hamilton

Mr. Howard is Sara Howard’s father and a point of interest for Sara’s character. He taught his only child to shoot, gamble, and drink. Several years prior to the events of The Alienist, however, he died in a “shooting accident”. Many say he committed suicide but Sara adamantly denies it and she spent some time in a sanatorium after his death.

Hunt, Richard Howland

Architect and son of Richard Morris Hunt. After his father’s sudden death, he took over his work. He is mentioned briefly within The Angel of Darkness as he is a friend of Dr. Kreizler.

Hunt, Richard Morris

Prominent figure in 19th century architecture who is mentioned within The Angel of Darkness as he was another old friend of Dr. Kreizler.

Hunter, Micah

The husband of Libby Hatch during the time of The Angel of Darkness. She kept him drugged for many months and eventually murdered him.

ibn-Ghazi, Ali (“Fatima”)

A fourteen year old victim of John Beecham within The Alienist. He was a prostitute who dressed as a girl and worked out of Scotch Ann’s Golden Rule Pleasure Club.

Isaacson, Cordelia

Cordelia is the sister of Marcus and Lucius Isaacson and is mentioned by the brothers within The Alienist. Her name originates from one of Shakespeare’s works.

Isaacson, Mrs.

Mrs. Isaacson is the mother of Marcus and Lucius Isaacson who is spoken to briefly within The Angel of Darkness by Stevie Taggert on the phone. She is Jewish with a strong Germanic accent and a poor knowledge of English. It seems that she learnt much of the English she does know from the works of Shakespeare, as suggested by the Isaacson brothers when they explain the origins of their names to Dr. Kreizler and John Moore.

James, William

A famous psychologist who taught Dr. Kreizler, John Moore, and Theodore Roosevelt in an undergraduate psychology course in 1877 at Harvard. Although Dr. Kreizler respected him, he disagreed with his concept of free will and after many heated discussions, they debated the topic in University Hall.

Johannsen, Peter (Jonathan Hatch)

A sixteen month old baby who was abducted from his parents by Libby Hatch prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness. She renamed him Jonathan Hatch and claimed him as her son for two months before she murdered him.

Jones, Morton

Jones is a now retired Sheriff who filed the original report on the death of Matthew and Thomas Hatch, as well as the attempted murder of Clara Hatch, prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness.

Joseph

A friend of one of John Beecham’s victims within The Alienist (Ali ibn-Ghazi) who befriends John Moore. Like Ali, he also works at Scotch Ann’s Golden Rule Pleasure Club. Unfortunately, due to his connection with Mr Moore, he becomes a victim of Beecham as well.

Kimball, William W.

Lieutenant of the United States Navy. Theodore Roosevelt brought him up from Washington to help plan the final attack on Libby Hatch and the Hudson Dusters within The Angel of Darkness. Given his expertise in war plans and naval weapons, Roosevelt suggests that Kimball’s help is necessary in fighting a group like the Dusters.

Kreizler, Mr.

Dr. Kreizler’s father is mentioned several times within both The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness. He was originally a wealthy publisher and politician in Europe but had to flee to the United States when Dr. Kreizler was only a small child. In public he was seen as being extroverted and charming, but in private he was abusive to his wife and children: he shattered Dr. Kreizler’s arm when the Doctor was a child, and was also emotionally abusive to his son. By the time of the events in The Alienist, he had suffered from a stroke and was living as a recluse.

Kreizler, Mrs.

Dr. Kreizler’s mother is mentioned within The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness. She played a passive role in her children’s early lives and didn’t try to stop her husband from physically abusing the children. Despite this, Dr. Kreizler believes that she didn’t like seeing her children get hurt but he does suggest that some “perverse” part of her did like getting abused by her husband.

Langham, Dr.

Dr. Langham is a physician at St. Luke’s Hospital who is mentioned within The Angel of Darkness as he attended to one of Libby Hatch’s victims who she claimed was her son.

Lawrence, Dr.

A local doctor who doubles as a coroner in Ballston Spa. Prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness, he treated Clara Hatch after she had been shot.

Leshka, Ellie

Before the events of The Alienist, John Beecham stalked Ellie when he worked for the Census Bureau. Unusually, he never attempted to hurt her but rather wished to befriend her.

Leshko, Mrs.

Mrs. Leshko is the Russian housekeeper and cook who temporarily worked at Dr. Kreizler’s residence within The Angel of Darkness.

Lily

A very attractive actress who John Moore spends at least one night with in The Angel of Darkness.

Linares, Ana

Ana is the baby daughter of Señor and Señora Linares who is abducted by Libby Hatch within The Angel of Darkness.

Linares, Isabella

Señora Linares is the wife of a Spanish consulate official in New York. Her baby daughter, Ana, is abducted by Libby Hatch within The Angel of Darkness and she requests the investigative teams services in finding her.

Linares, Narciso

Señor Linares is the private secretary of the consul of Spain in New York. After his daughter is abducted by Libby Hatch in The Angel of Darkness, he is abusive toward his wife to prevent her from going to the police. He is more concerned about the political implications of making his daughter’s abduction public than about her being harmed.

Lohmann, Ernst

One of the final victims of John Beecham within The Alienist who worked at the Black and Tan.

Macleod, Alexander

An acquaintance of the Isaacson brothers who is an expert in handwriting analysis. He indirectly helps the investigation in The Alienist via the phone.

Markoe, James W.

Dr. Markoe works at the New York Lying-in Hospital and was mentioned due to Libby Hatch’s employment there prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness. Was also J.P. Morgan’s personal physician.

Markowitz, Harris

A haberdasher who poisoned his grandchildren, Samuel and Sophie Rieter. Although this doesn’t fit with the pattern of Beecham’s murders, Dr. Kreizler still interviews him in connection with the investigation during The Alienist in order to develop a “negative image” of the killer they are looking for.

Maurel, Victor

French baritone who appears within an opera in The Alienist.

Maxon, Irving W.

One of Libby Hatch’s lawyers within The Angel of Darkness. He assists Mr. Darrow within the case.

Meyer, Adolf

Dr. Adolf Meyer is a famous psychatrist who is an old friend of Dr. Kreizler and who he consults on several matters during the team’s investigations within both The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness.

McPherson, Paulie

A patient of Dr. Kreizler who commits suicide just prior to The Angel of Darkness. His death prompts an investigation into the running of the Kreizler Institute, forcing Dr. Kreizler to leave the premises for a month.

Miller, Mr.

Mr. Miller is the night watchman for Castle Garden in Battery Park, the location for one of the murders in The Alienist.

Miller, Frederick

Captain Miller is with the army. After losing an arm in battle at the Dakotas, he took up a command position in the reserve forces where he met John Beecham prior to the events of The Alienist. After an incident in which Beecham was found stabbing a corpse on a battlefield, Captain Miller relieved him of his duties.

Moore, Mrs.

The Mrs. Moore that we meet within The Alienist is John Moore’s grandmother who he lives with throughout the story. By the events of The Angel of Darkness, she has died and left John a large inheritance.

Mudgett, Herman Webster

One of the most famous serial killers of the 19th century. He is mentioned several times within The Alienist as John Moore’s grandmother is afraid he might escape from his jail cell before his execution.

Muhlenberg, Michael

Baby son of Mrs. Muhlenberg who was poisoned by Libby Hatch when she took on the role of his wet nurse. His mother is interviewed by Sara Howard and Stevie Taggert within The Angel of Darkness.

Muhlenberg, Mrs.

A woman in the town of Stillwater who lost her husband and her face due to severe burns from a fire set by Libby Hatch prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness. Libby set the fire after she had poisoned Mrs. Muhlenberg’s son.

Murray, Charles H.

Superintendent for the United States Bureau of Census which employed John Beecham as an enumerator prior to the events of The Alienist. Mr. Murray is able to provide Sara Howard and John Moore with one of Beecham’s old addresses, aiding his eventual capture.

Nordica, Lillian

Madame Nordica is a singer from the Metropolitan Opera, mentioned within The Angel of Darkness as she is one of John and Dr. Kreizler’s favourite performers.

Nosy

A youth in a gang of boys that runs with Crazy Butch, one of Monk Eastman’s men. Stevie used to belong to the same gang prior to becoming Dr. Kreizler’s ward. Nosy makes a brief appearance in The Angel of Darkness when he and his friends find decapitated torso in the river.

O’Brien, Captain

Police Captain O’Brien is the head of the Detective Bureau. He is mentioned within The Angel of Darkness as he put the Isaacson brothers in charge of the investigation into the Kreizler Instutite.

Osborne, Dr.

An associate of Dr. Kreizler who lives nearby Doctor’s house, and is met briefly within The Alienist.

Parker, Clayton

Reverend Parker was Libby Hatch’s lover while she was married to Daniel Hatch in Ballston Spa. It is believed that Matthew and Thomas Hatch’s father is really the Reverend. He plays a small role during Libby Hatch’s trial within The Angel of Darkness for this reason.

Piedmont, Mrs.

Prior to the events of The Alienist, John Beecham rented a room from Mrs. Piedmont, an elderly lady who is obsessive about her pet cats. Before he moved out of her home, he killed one of her cats.

Pomeroy, Jesse Harding

Jesse is one of the youngest serial killers ever charged in the United States. He is interviewed within The Alienist by Dr. Kreizler and John Moore to gain a better understanding of the role mothers can play in the formation of a murderer.

Pratt, Julia

Miss Julia Pratt of Washington used to be John Moore’s fiancee. The engagement, however, was called off two years prior to the events of The Alienist.

Rajk, Berthe

A twelve year old girl who Dr. Kreizler interviews for entrance into his Institute within The Alienist. She isn’t admitted on the basis that her misbehaviour is due to a physical condition.

Rajk, Mrs.

The Hungarian mother of Berthe who speaks very little English and therefore has difficulty understanding Dr. Kreizler’s assessment of her daughter within The Alienist.

Ranhofer, Mr.

Chef at the Delmonico’s restaurant. He is mentioned within The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness as the restaurant is an important setting for many of the scenes in both of the books.

Reinhart, Judge

Mentioned within The Angel of Darkness, Judge Reinhart is in charge of the initial hearing into Paulie McPherson’s death at the Kreizler Institute. He retires shortly after this and the case is passed onto Judge Samuel Welles.

Rieter, Samuel

Samuel is poisoned by his grandfather, who is interviewed within The Alienist.

Rieter, Sophie

Sister of Samuel Rieter who is also poisoned by her grandfather within The Alienist.

Riis, Jake

Police reporter for the Evening Sun and writer of How The Other Half Lives. Met briefly within The Alienist.

Roosevelt, Alice Lee

Theodore Roosevelt’s eldest daughter from his first marriage who is met briefly within The Alienist.

Roosevelt, Archie

Theodore and Edith Roosevelt’s youngest child at the time of The Alienist.

Roosevelt, Edith

Theodore Roosevelt’s second wife, met by Sara Howard and John Moore briefly within The Alienist.

Roosevelt, Ethel

One of Theodore and Edith Roosevelt’s daughters, met very briefly within The Alienist.

Roosevelt, Kermit

One of Theodore and Edith Roosevelt’s sons, met very briefly within The Alienist.

Roosevelt, Ted

Theodore and Edith Roosevelt’s oldest son, seen in The Alienist feeding his pet owl, Pompey.

Rudesheimer, Conrad

His daughter is killed by Henry Wolff, a man that gets is interviewed in The Alienist by Dr. Kreizler.

Rudesheimer, Louisa

A young girl who is murdered by Henry Wolff within The Alienist.

Ryder, Albert Pinkham (“Pinkie”)

Pinkie is a friend of Dr. Kreizler. He is an eccentric artist who is able to provide the team with a recommendation for a sketch artist who is required to get a likeness of Libby Hatch within The Angel of Darkness.

Santorelli, Georgio (aka Gloria)

A thirteen year old victim of John Beecham within The Alienist. He was a prostitute who dressed as a girl and worked out of Biff Ellison’s Paresis Hall on Cooper Square.

Santorelli, Mr.

Father of Georgio Santorelli, a boy who is killed by John Beecham. He is briefly met within The Alienist after being beaten up in relation to his son’s murder.

Santorelli, Mrs.

Mother of Georgio who plays a small role within The Alienist. She speaks no English and because of this, when Beecham sends her a letter regarding her son’s death, she requires the help of Sara to interpret it. The letter helps greatly in the murder investigation moving forward.

Saville, Frances

Australian prima donna who appears in two operas within The Alienist. She is considered second to Melba during the era in which the books are set and John Moore refers to her as “she of the legs”.

Scotch Ann

Scotch Ann is a woman who runs the Golden Rule Pleasure Club, the place of work for Ali ibn-Ghazi and Joseph, two of the victims in The Alienist.

Seidl, Anton

Hungarian conductor for the New York Philharmonic during the 1890s. He appeared within The Alienist as the conductor for Don Giovanni.

Sick Louie

Another youth in a gang of boys that runs with Crazy Butch, one of Monk Eastman’s men. Stevie knows him as he used to belong to the same gang. Sick Louie makes a brief appearance in The Angel of Darkness when he finds a decapitated torso in the river.

Slap

The third youth in Crazy Butch’s gang of boys. As with Nosy and Sick Louie, Stevie knows him from his time with the same gang. Slap appears briefly within The Angel of Darkness when he finds a decapitated torso floating in the river.

Spotswood, Merle

We haven’t met Merle yet in either The Alienist or The Angel of Darkness, but we do know that Cyrus marries her eventually and the pair have three children together (one of whom ends up attending medical school).

Steffens, Link

Police reporter for the Post, met briefly within The Alienist.

Stevenson, Mr.

The doorman of John Moore’s apartment building at Number 34 Gramercy Park. He is met briefly within The Angel of Darkness.

Taggert, Ms.

The mother of Stevie Taggert who relyed on her son to financially support her alcohol addiction. She eventually moved in with You Fat, a Chinese drug dealer, when Stevie was eight years old as she had become further addicted to opium. It was at this point that Stevie abandoned his mother completely and joined a gang. She is mentioned briefly within The Angel of Darkness.

Vanderbilt II, Cornelius

Interviewed by John Moore and Dr. Kreizler because he and Mrs Vanderbilt had employed Libby Hatch three years prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness. The meeting helps the team gain important information about Libby’s past before she arrived in New York City.

An old friend of John Moore who helps with the investigation in The Alienist by providing access to documents at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C.

Welles, Samuel

Judge Welles precedes over the trial into Paulie McPherson’s death at the Kreizler Institute. Surprisingly, he dismisses the case stating that the Institute was running well at the time of the death and that although the event was unfortunate, it did not warrant closing the Institute.

Weston, Josiah

Owns a farm on the east side of Ballston Spa with his wife, Ruth. He agrees to allow Dr. Kreizler access to his foster daughter, Clara Hatch, in order to help her learn to speak again within The Angel of Darkness.

Weston, Kate

It is uncertain what Kate’s real surname is but as she is a foster child of Ruth and Josiah Weston, for the purposes of this list, recording her as a Weston seems appropriate. She is one of Clara Hatch’s foster siblings within The Angel of Darkness.

Weston, Peter

Like Kate Weston, as it is uncertain what Peter’s real surname is, for the purposes of this list, he is recorded as a Weston because he is one of the foster children of Ruth and Josiah Weston. Within The Angel of Darkness, he is one of Clara Hatch’s foster siblings.

Weston, Ruth

Ruth is the wife of Josiah Weston and foster mother of Clara Hatch. She and her husband also have two other foster children, Peter and Kate. She is met a few times within The Angel of Darkness.

Wissler, Clark

Dr. Wissler is a student of Franz Boas. He specialises in different Indian tribes and like his teacher, works at the Museum of Natural History. He assists the investigation team within The Alienist by explaining death practices of some specific tribes.

Wolff, Henry

Wright, Louisa

Prior to the events of The Angel of Darkness, Mrs Wright worked as a housekeeper for the Hatch family in Ballston Spa. She is interviewed by Sara Howard for information about Libby Hatch.

You Fat

Stevie Taggert’s mother’s drug dealer who she slept with in order to obtain her supply of opium. He is mentioned briefly within The Angel of Darkness.

Zweig, Abraham

Mr. Zweig is the father of two children who were murdered by John Beecham. Although he is not met within The Alienist, the deaths play a large role within the investigation.
